Quiz Details

This quiz covers the major symbols introduced in Chapters 1-3 of The Great Gatsby. You will have 30 minutes once you begin.

Reading Guide

As you read Chapters 5 and 6, track the following in your symbol tracker handout:

  • Every appearance of the green light: note the page, context, and what it represents NOW vs. Chapter 1
  • New symbols: Gatsby's shirts, the rain, the clock on Nick's mantle
  • How Gatsby's behavior changes when he's around Daisy

Come to class ready to answer: "Is the green light more or less powerful once Gatsby is reunited with Daisy? Why?"

Analytical Essay: Symbol Analysis

Write a 3-5 paragraph analytical essay examining how Fitzgerald uses ONE major symbol to develop a central theme.

Essay Requirements

  • Choose ONE symbol: the green light, the Valley of Ashes, or the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg
  • Develop a clear thesis connecting the symbol to a theme
  • Use at least 3 specific quotes with page numbers
  • Analyze HOW and WHY Fitzgerald uses the symbol, not just what it means
  • MLA format, 12pt Times New Roman, double-spaced

Grading Rubric

  • Thesis (20 pts): Clear, arguable claim connecting symbol to theme
  • Evidence (30 pts): Specific, well-chosen textual evidence with citations
  • Analysis (30 pts): Explains HOW evidence supports the thesis
  • Writing (20 pts): Organization, clarity, grammar, MLA format

Gatsby Final Project: Proposal

Project Options
